Before you start

Open Website, then Edit, and open Home page design. We're turning this on business by business. Everything you change goes into a draft that visitors don't see until you choose Publish changes.

Arrange the sections

  1. Use the up and down arrows next to a section to move it. The top of the page always comes first.
  2. Use the eye to hide or show a section. The contact and quote section always shows, so visitors can get in touch.
  3. Under Add a section, choose Add for any kind of section, or Show for one that's hidden. Each kind can be on the page up to 3 times, so you can show your services twice, for example. A new Text and photo, Call to action or Simple list shows nothing until you write it.
  4. A copy you added has a bin next to it. The template's own sections can be hidden but not removed.

Change how a section looks

  1. Choose Edit next to the section.
  2. Pick a Layout, such as a list or a grid with photos.
  3. Under Parts shown, untick anything you don't want, such as the photos or the captions. Parts marked (always shown) stay.
  4. Pick Spacing, Background and, where there is one, Highlight colour and Button. Text colour is set for you, so it's always easy to read.
  5. Under Order, use the arrows to change the order of the steps, questions, services or contact details.
  6. For a picture, choose the part to keep in view when it's cropped, and its shape. Circle is only offered where the layout has room for it. Your photo itself isn't changed.
  7. Reset to the template's look takes that section back to how the template draws it, and keeps your wording.

A section you've changed is drawn the builder's way, in your template's fonts and colours. Sections you haven't touched look exactly as the template draws them.

For the top of the page, and when you choose a photo for a Text and photo section, describe the picture in a few words under Describe the photo, such as “Our van outside a terraced house”. People who can't see the photo hear this instead.

At the top of the page you can set a Main button and a Second button. In a Call to action, choose where its button goes (your quote form, your phone number, your email, a page of your website or a section on this page) and, if you like, its words.

Under Buttons, pick one fill and shape for every button on your website, or keep the template's own. On a section with a coloured background, buttons always take the colours that read best on it.

See it and publish

  1. Choose Save draft, then look at the Draft preview at Phone or Desktop width.
  2. Choose Publish changes to put it live. Undo last publish puts your page back as it was before.

What happens next

Visitors see your changes straight away, or within five minutes. Changing template later keeps your sections and wording. There's no way to add code, scripts or your own colour for one section, so nothing you choose can make your website hard to read or slow.

If something goes wrong

  • “The top of the page always comes first.”: move the other section down instead.
  • “Add Call to action 3 times at most.”: remove a copy you added first.
  • “Leave out web addresses. Visitors use your contact details and quote form.”: take the web address out of your wording.
  • You can't see a change in the preview: choose Save draft first. The preview shows your saved draft.
  • “Describe the photo for people who can't see it.”: fill in Describe the photo under the photo you chose.
  • “A button goes to a section that isn't on the page.”: choose another section for the button, or put the section back.
