Tax summary and Making Tax Digital

Your income and expenses in HMRC's categories for each quarter (MTD), a tax estimate, and files for your accountant.

Help centre
What you'll need
  • Your expenses added, with HMRC categories set in Settings, Expense categories
  1. In Money, open Tax summary.
  2. Choose the Tax year, and the Quarter or Tax year to date.
  3. Under Quarter dates, choose Standard (to the 5th) or Calendar (to month end), whichever your updates use.
  4. Check Income and Expenses. Above them, the page says the dates covered and when to send the update by.
  5. Choose Download CSV for the summary. Under Export your records, choose Income CSV, Expenses CSV or Receipts ZIP for any dates.

What happens next

Give the files to your accountant, or use them with bridging software. Filing Making Tax Digital with your accountant or bridging software, at the bottom of the page, explains how, and who has to use Making Tax Digital.

The figures are on the cash basis: money counts on the day it comes in or goes out, and each update adds up from the start of the tax year.

Tax estimate shows the Income Tax and Class 4 National Insurance on your profit so far this tax year. It's an estimate, not a tax bill. Mileage or actual van costs puts HMRC's mileage rate next to each van's recorded costs.

If your accountant uses harulu, they can mark a quarter reviewed and leave you notes, under Accountant's review.

Sending updates to HMRC

We're turning this on business by business, so you may not see it yet. Where it's on, the owner chooses Connect to HMRC under HMRC, with their National Insurance number, and signs in on HMRC's own site. Quarterly updates HMRC expects then lists each quarter. Choose Check and send, tick I’ve checked these figures and they’re right, then Send to HMRC. Check and correct sends a correction. Your final declaration for the year is done in other software, usually your accountant's.

If something goes wrong

  • “The summary couldn’t load. Check your connection and try again.”: refresh the page.
  • “Choose a start date on or before the end date.”: check the export dates.
  • An expense is in Other business expenses: give its category an HMRC category in Settings, Expense categories.
  • “The figures have changed since you checked them. Check them again before sending.”: check the figures and send again.
  • “That link has expired. Start connecting again.”: choose Connect to HMRC again.

Who can do this

The owner, managers with Can see money reports, tax and totals, and your accountant. Only the owner connects HMRC and sends updates.
