Direct Debit is slower than a card, because the banks take a few working days. Here is what happens, in order.
- The customer sets up their Direct Debit from your link or their portal. It shows as Waiting for the customer, then Set up, waiting for the bank, then Active. With GoCardless, you can collect while the bank is still confirming it. With Stripe, you collect once it's Active.
- You choose Collect by Direct Debit on an invoice. Before you do, the invoice says the earliest date it will be taken. After you do, it says “will be collected by Direct Debit on” that date.
- GoCardless emails the customer before the payment is taken. That notice comes from GoCardless (or Stripe, if you collect through Stripe), not from us.
- On the date, the bank takes the payment. It shows as on its way until GoCardless confirms it.
- Once confirmed, the invoice shows as paid and the customer is emailed a receipt.
If it fails, you're told, the customer is emailed, and it appears in Failed collections. Collect again works the same way, with a new date.
With GoCardless, the earliest date is set by GoCardless, usually a few working days after you collect. With Stripe, it's usually taken three working days after you collect.
Nothing is collected by itself: you choose when to collect, one invoice at a time or all that are due with Collect all due on Money, Direct Debit.
